Travel-Themed Care Packages

Travel-themed care packages give your loved on a little escape from their current (and likely not so pleasant) reality. Get ideas for your next box here!

I’m not sure how it happened, but right around age 25, the travel bug bit me and bit me hard. Don’t get me wrong, I’d had “travel” on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, but didn’t really do anything about it until I met my husband. Suddenly I had someone in my life who enjoyed exploring new places and I enjoyed exploring with! In less than seven years, we’ve seen multiple states and visited 5 countries, with plans to hit quite a few more in the very near future. That love of traveling together got me thinking about about travel-themed care packages and how perfect they’d be for deployments!

Why travel-themed care packages?

Think about the dark days of your deployment – what got you through them? Maybe a visit with a friend? A special treat? Looking forward to something fun happening once it was all over?

Your loved one needs help getting through those tough times as well and a great way to do that is with travel-themed care packages!

A little glimpse of a post-deployment trip gives them something to look forward to and makes them feel like they’re part of the planning process. Sending guidebooks, maps, photos and maybe a food item from the destination help make the trip (and the end of deployment) seem closer!

If you’re not planning a post-deployment vacation, you can still send a travel-themed box based off a dream vacation, a past vacation or even your hometown! The idea with this theme is to give your loved on a little escape from their current (and likely not so pleasant) reality.

Decorating your box

Travel-themed care packages are great because you can take advantage of so many pre-created elements right from your local craft store! Pre-printed paper and stickers can help you give your care package a fun look, even if you’re not the craftiest person in the world.

Pre-printed paper comes in many different patterns, but I’d use a map or plane print for this theme. If you are planning a box around a specific location, you may not be able to find scrapbook paper that fits that exactly, but you could always use actual maps instead.

All of these fun papers are available at Michaels and would be a great addition to your travel-themed care packages. The plane paper could also be really nice for a homecoming-themed care package.

You can also go with a solid color for your background and add in fun stickers to drive the travel theme home. Planes, globes and suitcases are all good for a general travel theme, but most craft stores have location-specific stickers that you could use as well.

General travel-themed care packages can use any of the below sayings:

  • You mean the world to me
  • You are worth every mile between us
  • Love from BLANK
  • Distance is just a test to see how far love can travel
  • Adventure is out there

Filling your box

There are almost as many different ways to fill your box as there are places in the world to travel!

If you’re sending a box with a specific location as a theme, you can pick items that would naturally fit that location (lei for Hawaii, microwavable pasta for Italy, Swedish Fish for Sweden, etc.) or items that are about that location. I love sending my husband guidebooks for our next destination so he can get excited for the trip as well. I always send along some sticky notes so he can mark anything he finds interesting.

If your box focuses on your hometown, you can send locally-made products including favorite snacks, novelty t-shirts and local publications (think magazines or newspapers).
