Charity Spotlight: United Through Reading

January 16, 2017

I am committed to giving back to military families in as many ways as possible. One of the ways I’m doing just that is by donating 10% of each purchase in my Countdowns and Cupcakes Shop to an organization that supports military families. Each quarter I’ll spotlight one charity that you and I are supporting!

Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around reading; being read to and reading to others were two of the many ways my family showed love to each other. I still have a passion for books and believe so strongly in passing that love of reading onto my children. So you can imagine my excitement when I came across United Through Reading while researching organizations to contribute to.

United Through Reading is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefit organization dedicated to uniting U.S. military families who face physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together.

In more than 200 locations worldwide, United Through Reading offers military service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading books to their children at home. Our program creates emotional connections between parents and their children, encourages literacy, and makes homecomings easier.

This is just beyond amazing. A and I don’t have children yet, but I can only imagine that having dad still read kids a bedtime story would ease a lot of their worries during a deployment. Heck, having A read me a bedtime story would ease my worries during deployment.

I love that military personnel can go to recording centers around the world to record themselves reading a book and then their sweet kids get a DVD that they can watch over and over again. What’s even cooler is that this whole organization was founded by a military spouse!

United Through Reading touches my heart in a way that not all charities do and I’m very excited that they will receive 10% of December and January’s sales.  Please check out their website and learn a little more about them!
